NordVPN – the forefather of all online security providers on the market. You’ve finally decided to go for it, but now you must download, install, and configure their client.

This is why I’m here, so keep a close eye on what I’m going to tell you.

1. Creating an account

First off, open an account on the official NordVPN site. Go there and click on the Get limited deal button – this will get you a limited deal!

Choose one of the offers on display. To make things simpler, know that the only difference between them is the length of the subscription and the price per month. In rest, all of them have the same characteristics.

This is to say that a one-month plan will be just as good and efficient as the 3-year plan. NordVPN isn’t fooling around.

Next up – secure your account and complete the registration process by putting in your payment method and filling in the rest of the details. You can choose to pay with PayPal, any sort of credit or debit card imaginable, and even Bitcoin is supported.

Last but not least, you have to agree to their Terms of Service before you can proceed to the checkout panel.

2. Open your NordVPN Dashboard

After the payment is complete and confirmed, you’ll receive a message with a link in it. Click on it. The dashboard will spring up now, and you have to go to the Download Area section.

From there, choose your device and click on the appropriate link. After the download is complete, follow this step-by-step guide to make things easier while installing and using NordVPN:

  • Go to your Downloads folder and double click on the NordVPN Setup.exe to proceed with the installation process
  • Depending on your device’s configuration, a new window will appear asking you for administrator rights. Click on Yes to proceed forward
  • A big white-blue windows will appear with the NordVPN logo on it. This is the NordVPN installer window, if you had any doubts. Click on Install
  • You’ll see the installation going forward pretty fast, so you won’t have to wait for the second coming of Christ before getting to use it
  • Once the installation process finishes, the application itself will also automatically boot up. Note that the shortcut for the NordVPN client will appear on your desktop
  • Using the client on Windows 7 and all the above platforms no longer requires a Ph.D. in IT like the older versions did. Just login using your credentials. It’s that easy.
  • Appearing next will be the main interface of NordVPN’s client. Occupying most of the screen will be the main map with all the available servers that you can connect to. On the top, you can find the settings, and access the server search feature. On the bottom of the app, there’s the Quick Connect button.
  • Clicking on it will find you the most suitable server based on your current specifications and real-time location. The complex algorithms and parameters make up the whole formula behind this automatic process.
  • What’s more, you can also connect to a specific server in a country by clicking on the country pin on the map.
  • The country pin will turn green to signify that the connection process has succeeded, and that you are now protected by NordVPN. Moreover, the Quick Button status will also say that you are connected, and display your new IP address
  • To connect to a specific server, you can also use the search engine embedded in the client itself. Just enter a country or a server number in the search field, and you’ll soon find what you need
  • Once you’ve connected, you can close the application window. It will still be present in the system tray area at the bottom right corner of your screen. By clicking on NordVPN’s icon in the system tray area, you will have access to the basic commands like connect/disconnect, reconnecting to any recently used servers, open or quit the application.

3. Micro-managing your NordVPN client

From the main client app, you’ll notice that on the left side, there’s a list with all the available servers, organized into countries and specialty servers like DoubleVPN, Dedicated IP, and Onion (Tor) over VPN.

With the DoubleVPN feature, you can go and select a combination between Canada and the United States. Also, take a look at the dropdown menu – it will show a percentage next to the server. This indicates the current load of the server. In other words, the more people connect to the server, the higher the percentage.

You can add certain servers to your favorites by clicking on the heart symbol in the dropdown menu.

They will all appear in the My Favorites section, in a category of their own. This is where you can create your own stash of the best servers that NordVPN has to offer. You can connect to them just like you would any other server using the normal method.

The Settings tab hides many configuration options that you’ll want to change at some point or another. So, let’s take a look at what there is to know.

There are many sections that require your attention, and you need to know what each of them does:

  • CyberSec – this will prevent you from seeing any troubling ads, malware sites or being bothered by phishing attempts or other invasive threats. Just enable it, and start roaming the internet like a boss
  • Auto connect – enable this so that the app will automatically connect you to a specific server upon boot-up. This feature is disabled by default
  • Start NordVPN on startup – this one will start NordVPN with your Windows. It’s enabled by default, so if you have problems with resources or you have a slower machine, you might want to disable it
  • Internet Kill Switch – the bread and butter of any good VPN – the feature that cuts off your internet connection if the VPN malfunctions. It’s disabled by default, so don’t do anything else before enabling it
  • Invisibility on LAN – this feature allows you to become invisible to other third parties on the local area network (LAN). However, remember that once you enable this feature, you won’t be able to access any devices connected to your LAN, including your printer and other handy accessories
  • App Kill Switch – this feature closes any application of your choice the server connection terminated unexpectedly. It’s disabled by default. If you have Skype installed and you don’t want anyone to spy on your private conversations, you might want to add this app to the Kill Switch list. When the VPN malfunctions, one of the first things it’ll do is close down the Skype app.
  • This is also very handy when you’re using an unstable Wi-Fi connection. With the constant disconnections, the app will also close down the Skype app when the VPN isn’t fully functional
  • Notifications – Enable this feature to receive notifications about the server when you connect or disconnect. It’s enabled by default
  • Start minimized – this feature forces the NordVPN app to stay in the system tray area when you boot Windows up. It’s enabled by default
  • The Account Details are accessible in the left sidebar. The Logout button is also located at the very bottom

The Advanced settings section hides some essential features as well:

  • Protocol – choose between UDP and TCP. The first one is more useful for when you want to stream or download large files faster. The latter is more reliable and secure, but also quite slower in comparison. It’s normally used for web browsing. UDP is the default option.
  • Custom DNS – set the custom DNS servers that you want the application to use
  • Obfuscated Servers – this feature is specially created for people living in highly restricted and network-restricted countries. It will allow you to bypass any firewall and geo-restrictions, thus giving you access to everything there is on the internet
  • Diagnostics – If you have any problems to report, you can do so using this feature. It will collect specific data and send a ticket ID to the support team. If this fails, you can send the .zip file to the support guys yourself

This is really all there is to downloading, installing, using and configuring the NordVPN client. Not even their customer support team could have explained it better, if I may say so myself.

All in all, choosing NordVPN as your VPN provider is one of the best choices you’re going to make this year. Its services are absolutely impeccable, whether it’s security, encryption protocols, prices, ease of use or customer support.

It’s not for nothing that it has the reputation of an industry leader. It provides exactly what it promises – utmost confidentiality, top-notch protection to ensure your anonymity, and complete privacy.

NordVPN is good, very good, in fact. I can tell you that much!
